In 1999, the 2nd International Film Festival, Mumbai, showcased 75 films from 24 countries . This year saw the birth of the festival films being made available to the general public for the first time in recognition of the increase in public demand to attend the festival.

The most noteworthy aspect of this year's festival was the decision to make the festival an annual event because of its success.

  Awards

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to B. R. Chopra , a man whose name is forever synonymous with Mahabharat, the Hindu made for TV epic that brought India to a standstill on Sunday mornings.
The award for Significant Contribution to Indian Cinema for over 25 years was presented to Shabana Azmi , a luminous and trailblazing actress who made in an indelible mark in such films as Fire and others.

The Kodak Award for Technical Excellence was introduced and was awarded to Subrato Mitra , the innovative cameraman on Satyajit Ray's films.
